Exploring the coral reef of Sipadan Island with Asia Rainforest Resort near Semporna and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park

Day Tour: Sipadan Island (Permits Required)

Sipadan is widely considered one of the top diving destinations in the world. The island sits on the edge of a volcanic ridge that drops to a 600-metre wall, ringed by 160 hectares of coral reef. The waters hold over 3,000 fish species, large schools of barracuda and jackfish, bumphead parrotfish and green and hawksbill sea turtles in remarkable numbers. Sipadan is a strictly protected marine reserve with a daily permit cap. Permits are arranged through licensed dive operators in advance.

Sipadan day trips depart from Mabul-area resorts. Guests of Asia Rainforest Resort can combine their stay with a 2 to 5 night extension at a Mabul-area dive resort to secure Sipadan permits and access the site.

  • Wall dives along the 600-metre drop-off at Barracuda Point, South Point and Drop Off
  • Dense schools of barracuda and jackfish at Barracuda Point
  • Green and hawksbill sea turtles: among the highest-density turtle sites in Southeast Asia

Divers exploring the reef at Sipadan Island Asia Rainforest Resort

Sipadan: Diving the Drop-Off

For certified divers, Sipadan offers a concentration of pelagic and reef life that few sites in the world can match. The vertical wall at Drop Off descends straight to 600 metres, covered in soft corals, gorgonian fans and sponges. At Barracuda Point the famous swirling tornado of schooling barracuda, often numbering in the thousands, makes for one of the most photographed dive moments in Asia. South Point brings strong currents, hunting sharks and occasional scalloped hammerhead encounters.

  • Drop Off: vertical wall to 600 metres, sea turtles resting on ledges and white-tip reef sharks patrolling below
  • Barracuda Point: swirling schools of barracuda and jackfish, reliably present year-round
  • Turtle Patch and Mid Reef: among the highest turtle densities in Southeast Asia
  • Hanging Gardens: large gorgonian fans, pygmy seahorses and diverse wall life
  • Best visibility March to October, often reaching 30 to 50 metres at Sipadan sites

Not a flashy resort, but the staff are among the friendliest I encountered in Semporna. They were helpful and enthusiastic throughout. The food was tasty and the sea setting is peaceful. Simple, comfortable and well worth a stay if you want a low-key base in the area.
